Junior Beach Volleyball Athletes from the Puget Sound Region will have the opportunity to attend a free Train with the Pros Clinic at Jetty Island on July 9th with AVP and FIVB Tour Pro and USA National Team member Will Montgomery.  The clinic will take place from 11am to 2pm and space is limited.

Montgomery most recently competed with Stafford Slick on the FIVB Tour in the Anapa Open where they advanced to the round of 16 and tied for 9th place.  Montgomery is a Santa Barbara native and played indoor college ball for UC Irving.  In 2012 he played with Jeremy Casebeer, who Seaside volleyball fans know as "The Lorax" before switching to play with Avery Drost for most of 2013.  His current partnership with Stafford Slick has produced his best FIVB result as well as a pair of second place finishes in Norceca tournaments this year.

Montgomery will be teaching a skills clinic and answering questions during his trip to Jetty Island.  Junior athletes will have the opportunity to ask questions about the life of an up and coming AVP and FIVB pro as well as learn more about traveling the globe to play beach volleyball as a representative of Team USA.

Space for This Event is Very Limited
All attendees will have to travel via ferry from the 10th Ave Boat Ramp to Jetty Island
Ferry Reservations will be made for the athletes and coaches.  Parents will be responsible for their own ferry reservations.  Ferry reservations can be made by calling 425-257-8304.

It's official.  You will get to watch the likes of Krista Vansant, Cassie Strickland and the rest of the UW Women's Volleyball team compete in the sand this spring.

Here is what GoHuskies.com had to say:

SEATTLE - The University of Washington announced the addition of women’s sand volleyball as the Huskies’ 22nd varsity sport Thursday. Keegan Cook, an assistant on the indoor volleyball coaching staff, has been named head coach of the sand team, and will serve under the direction of Director of Volleyball, Jim McLaughlin. The Huskies’ sand squad will begin competition this spring, and will feature all 11 returners from UW’s 2013 Final Four indoor squad, including AVCA player-of-the-year Krista Vansant.
“We are excited to add women’s sand volleyball, and give our student-athletes the opportunity to compete for championships in a sport that is new to us,” Director of Athletics Scott Woodward said. “The rapid growth of participation in the sport here on the West Coast and nationally speaks to its popularity, and the remarkable potential it offers here at the University of Washington.”

Husky Alumni Christal Engle (Morrison) Starting to Leave a Mark on Pro Beach Volleyball

Christal Engle became immediately famous for her fitness, now her volleyball is turning heads.

The center court crowd went slightly mental when Christal Engle's home beach was announced as Alki Beach before the Women's Open division finals at the 2013 Seaside Beach Volleyball Tournament.  Seattle was well represented among the astronaut helmet wearers, sangria sippers, party couch occupants and junior players watching the championship match and they were happy to have a local hero in the match.

Engle was an integral part of the Washington Huskies 2005 National Championship team and was the school's first four time All-American as well as the leader in a large handful of offensive stat categories.  Not long after leaving the UW, she started her beach career with aspirations of similar dominance, but the transition has taken a bit more time than her fans had originally hoped.

2013 was her third consecutive finals appearance at Seaside.  She won in 2011 and came in runner up in 2012 and 2013.  This year she followed up the Seaside tournament with a third place finish at the AVP opener in Salt Lake City.  At just 27 years old, she is entering what should be her professional prime and all signs point that her career is heading the right direction.  Seattle fans are hopeful that their hometown hero will become their champion in the near future.

Gig Harbor Grass Classic Champions Mariah Vargas and Kasey Woodruff.

The tournament was a production of Penmet Parks and USA Volleyball in the Puget Sound Region.  Possible plans for future tournaments on the site involve the addition of a professional adult competition and live music.
